As our Moon continues its orbit counterclockwise around Earth(viewed from above the north pole), more and more of the illuminated partof the Moon becomes visible to us, until it reaches the “full Moon” stage. Afull Moon occurs when the Moon has moved in its orbit so that Earth is “between” the Moon and the Sun.

In order to appear full to us on Earth, we have to see the entire day side of the moon. That happens only when the moon is opposite the sun in our sky. So a full moon looks full because it’s opposite the sun.
