Large air cavities are found in the parenchyma of aquatic plants.

These plants have evolved in such a way that they grow either submerged or float on the top of the water.

In such circumstances, these plants need air to have buoyancy.

Aerenchyma is the spongy tissue that has air channels and spaces in the leaves, roots or stems of aquatic plants.

These also facilities transfer of gases between the shoot and the root and give a low resistance path for the exchange of gases between parts below the water and those parts above it.

It is found in both aquatic and wetland plants.
