The main function of a leaf is to produce food for the plant by photosynthesis. Chlorophyll, the substance that gives plants their characteristic green colour, absorbs light energy. The internal structure of the leaf is protected by the leaf epidermis, which is continuous with the stem epidermis.

Answer:

In some xerophytes the stem performs the function of leaves. In the genus Euphorbia, leaves are caducous I. e they fall immediately after their formation or if they persist on the plant they are reduced. These features help these xerophytes to cut down the transpiration rate. These stems are called as phylloclades. .

In Euphorbia royleana, E. splendens leaves are caducous. So photosynthesis is performed by stem, which turns green to perform this function. The spines on the stem represent reduced leaves.
