What are quadrants ?

In a Cartesian plane ; when the x axis (also know as abscissa) and y axis (also known as ordinate ) intersect at the origin i.e. the midpoint ; form 4 sections. These sections formed are known as quadrants. There are 4 quadrants which are named anti-clock wise. They are :

  • I quadrant - Both (x,y) are positive
  • II quadrant - (-x , y) x is negative and y is positive
  • III quadrant - (-x , -y) Both are negative
  • IV quadrant - (x , -y) X is positive but y is negative.

Note that the value of x axis is mentioned first and then is y axis.

So , following the above information ; we will solve the given problem .

Answers along with explanation :

1. Abscissa is (-5) and ordinate is 3

=> II quadrant

We know that abscissa is the other name for x axis and ordinate is another name for y axis. The value of x axis is -5 and the value of y axis is 3 . Thus it lies in II quadrant.

2. (-8,0)

=> On -x axis

Here the value of the coordinates is (-x , 0) so it lies on the negative x axis.

3. (1,-7)

=> IV quadrant

Here the value of x is positive and y is negative hence lies in the IV quadrant.

4. Ordinate -5 and abscissa -3

=> III quadrant

As mentioned earlier ; ordinate and abscissa are synonymous to y axis and x axis respectively. Here both the values are in negative forms hence lie in the IV quadrant.
