Even as the situation in Chennai has started improving as water levels are now going down, there are still a lot of areas which are yet suffering from the effects of the disaster.
Though the water was receding in many parts of the city, the misery of citizens showed little let up as power remained suspended in many areas as a precautionary measure, officials had said.
Mobile phone services, which had taken a severe beating following the heavy downpour, were partially restored but other services such as ATMs continued to remain shut.
Safe drinking water continued to remain a luxury for many. Milk and newspaper supplies were erratic and many citizens complained that vegetables were still being sold at high rates. Transport services were also showing signs of picking up.
However, defence forces have called off aerial sorties for rescue operations in flood-hit Chennai which is limping back to normalcy as water levels have started going down.
"The water level in the city has gone down considerably after initial days of flooding. Since last evening all aerial rescue and relief operations have been called off. There are no further communications from either Tamil Nadu government or Centre to carry them out as the city is slowly returning to normalcy,
