There were many reasons why Aurangazeb’s policies contributed to the decline of the Mughal Empire. Some of them are given below.

# Aurangazeb was intolerant towards any religion other than Islam. Thus, he earned the wrath an non-cooperation of non-Muslims such as Hindus to a large extent.

# Aurangazeb’s Deccan policy contributed towards the downfall of the empire. While he had the Marathas under his control by capturing the Deccan states of Bijapur and Golcunda, things took a U turn after his death. Earlier, the Marathas reigned over these states. If Aurangazeb had helped these states to fight against the Marathas, he would have earned their goodwill. But, he did not do this. When Aurangazeb passed away, the Marathas once again became powerful and started settling their scores against the Mughal Empire.

# Aurangazeb focused primarily conquering as much area as he could. This made the size of the empire too large to maintain. With modes of communication and transportation not fully developed, centralized administration became impossible. As a result, Mughal nobles responsible for collecting taxes from different parts of the dynasty started joining hands with the Marathas to do this. This helped Marathas to assess the weakness of the empire.
