In the years that followed Maharaja Ranjt Singh's victory over the Gobindgarh Fort and the transfer of the priceless diamond to its fold, the regime fell into the hands of the British Raj.

It was during the signing of the Lahore Pact in 1850 that the then Governor General sent the Kohinoor to Prince Albert as a gift. As the Kohinoor was divided into two pieces, one to be put on the crown while the other to make other jewellery from, the Gobindgarh Fort fell to ruins, having lost its sheen.

While the Indian government struggles to decide whether it wants the Kohinoor diamond back from the Tower of London or not, the Punjab Heritage And Tourism Promotion Board is working diligently to return the Fort to its former glory.
