Raj Kumar Shukla, a poor share-cropper from Bihar, met and persuaded Gandhiji for their cause at thirty-first session of Indian National Congress.

Shukla told Gandhi about the wrong behaviour of landlords and introduced him to miseries of poor farmers of Champaran. He asked Mahatma to visit Champaran to experience grievances of the poor cultivators.

As a result, in 1917, Gandhiji launched Champaran Satyagraha and was accompanied by men like Rajendra Prasad.
