India is a representative democracy. The people of India were eventually given the freedom to vote and elect their representatives. It offers its people in India the right to vote irrespective of caste, colour , religion, faith & gender. It has five principles of democracy-socialist, democratic, secular, republic, & sovereign,
Explanation:
Merits of Democracy
- Democracy's greatest strength is its defense of people's interests. True power rests in the people's hands who exercise it through their representatives chosen by them & who are accountable to the people. The social, political, & economic needs of the people under this structure are said to be best served
- The principle of equality is the cornerstone of democracy. In the eyes of the constitution, all State members are equal. Everyone has equal civil, political and economic rights, and the State can not discriminate on the grounds of race , ethnicity , gender or property between people. Everyone has the same right to elect his government.
- The stability, firmness & efficiency in government is esteemed. The elected official 's term is set and a stable democracy is established as it depends on popular support. The administration is done with a sense of duty. Representatives of the public address problems in greater depth and draw a "reasonable decision" in representative democracy.
- People are invited to participate in state affairs. Political parties present their policies & programmes for the benefit of the their candidates at the time of elections. All means of party propaganda- posters, public meetings, television, speeches, & radio, by leaders of the parties- are used to win public favour It creates "political consciousness" amongst the people.
- There is no possibility of popular revolt because democracy is founded on democratic will. People's elected representatives carry out widely funded state affairs. They can be thrown out & elections conducted again if they do not work well or if they do not live up to people's expectations.
Demerits of Democracy
- The primary goal of the candidates is to be elected. They also use underhand tactics, which are poor ways of getting elected. The destruction of character is knowingly practiced and dishonest practices are commonly adopted. Muscle power and capital power work together to ensure that they succeed. This constitutes a major loss of morality because, in due course, "when the character is lost everything' is lost."
- When neither party wins absolute majorities, instead there are coaalition governments. Whenever ideologies collide, the alliance is broken and regimes fail. Democracy is being blamed for creating majority hegemony. In fact, however, the majority is obligated to protect the interests of the minority. However, most time it disregards the minority and the minority is marginalized.
- Democracy is all about "rivalry&balancing power". Morality is not available. Democratic consultation by others leads to delays. The implication that political officials fail to consider the best interest of the public leads to poor decisions. Democracy results in corruption as it is centered on electoral competition.
