step

# find the element electronic configuration

#if the valence electron is 1 or 2 then the groups is 1 or 2

# if the valance electron is 3,4,5,6 and 7

#then add 10 then you find group

ex => Sodium (Na) = atomic no. 11

Electronic configuration = 2,8,1

group is 1 because valance electron is 1

magnesium (Mg) = atomic no. 12

Electronic configuration = 2,8,2

group is 2 because valence electron is 2

aluminum(Al) = atomic no. is 13

electronic configuration = 2,8,3

group is 13 because valance electron is 3 and i tell you if valance electron is 3,4,5,6,7 then add 10

therefore, 3+10 = 13
