THE CELL THEORY

As s you already know, all living things are made up of cells. We have billions of cells in our body. Most cells are too small to be seen with the naked eye. They can be seen only with the help of a microscope.

Cells were first identified in 1665 when Robert Hooke looked at a piece of cork under his microscope. He observed that the cork was made up of many small boxes. He called these little boxes cells because they reminded him of the small rooms called cells in which monks lived. However, the scientists of that period did not appreciate the importance of his discovery.

Later, between 1838 and 1839, two German biologists, Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann, put forward the cell theory of life.

Some of the main points of cell theory are

as follows:

. All living things are made up of cells.

. Cells are the basic units of all living things.

. new cells are formed when pre-existing cells divide

long story short

he discovered cells in 1665
