Answer:

Today is the birth anniversary of both Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Once Mahatma Gandhi was asked by the National Dairy Research Institute, Bangalore to fill up their visitor’s book, Gandhiji while filling it up indicated under the column Occupation, ‘Farmer’. Lal Bahadur Shastri coined the slogan Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan. Later Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee added Jai Vigyan to Jai Jawan and Jai Kisan. Considering all these events, farmers’ have chosen a correct occasion for their mega rally.

The major demand at the Delhi meeting is the implementation of the Swaminathan Committee Report on minimum support price and procurement policy. Mahatma Gandhi stressed that the real India lives in its villages and that village is the main home of farmers. I hope that on this occasion there will be greater public awareness of the urgency of making farming economically viable and that in future the mega rally will be organised to celebrate the life and message of Gandhiji and Lal Bahadur Shastri and not just for economic survival.
