let no. of benches = x and student = y

if 3 student sit on each bench 1 student will be left

y = 3x + 1 .. .. . (1)

if you sit on each bench one bench will be left

y = 4(x-1) .. .. .. (2)

on solving 1 and 2 we get

x=5 , y= 16

no. of benches = 5

no. of student= 16
