According, to me I believe that it did play a role in the outcome of the race. In the story we see that she refers her opponent to the old favourite in new shoes and her as the new comer in old shoes. Despite the negative thinking and even being seen as the newcomer in old shoes she still won the race with great motivation, determination and sheer sportsmanship. I believe that this shows that her shoes after all did play an outcome in the race.
