120 increased by 33 1/3 % gives 160

  • Represent the percentage in decimal form. Eg. for 50% represent it as 0.5 (50/100 = 0.5). Similarly, for 33 1/3% it would be 0.3333.
  • If we are told to increase a particular number then add 1 to the decimal represented value. So, 1 + 0.3333 = 1.3333. (If we were told to decrease a number by some percentage, in this step we would subtract the decimal represented percentage from 1, instead of adding).
  • Multiply the added value with the number to be increased. So, 120 × 1.3333 = 159.99  = 160.
  • Value by which the number increased = 160 - 120 = 40.
