Answer:

The reason India’s population is the second highest in the world is due to having a large proportional population already. The Indian and Chinese civilizations have always had a large population compared with others. The reason for this is because those lands are fertile. Before the industrial revolution, the population had met its maximum viable capacity. But as countries industrialized, the death rates fell, causing population growth which increased demand for resources. However, the increased demand was met with increased supply as more efficient farming techniques were invented.

India has a lot of births (approximately 360,000 per day). However, this can be attributed to its already large population of 1.3 billion. However, it was actually only 2.4 births per woman which is actually a little below the global average of 2.5 births per woman. Israel actually has a higher fertility rate of 3.1 births per woman yet not nearly as many people say that they’re overrun with overpopulation.

Let me assure you that we do not need to “arrest this monstrous growth”. Even if not for the UN’s projection that the country’s population will peak in 2070, the country is in no danger of overpopulation. Fears of overpopulation date back to at least 1800 when Thomas Malthus warned the UK of the growing population. You see, the birth rate was always high but death rate was almost as high because of infant mortality. However, death rate fell dramatically in the industrial revolution (in 1730–1749, 74.5 per 1,000 children born in London died before reaching the age of five. By 1810–1829, it had fallen to 31.9 per 1,000). The population of England and Wales remained steady at 6 million from 1700 to 1740. The population rose dramatically after 1740; in fact, it was 10.5 million in the 1801 census. Malthus looked at that census and was worried; he thought that if the population continued to grow at this rate that London would eventually be in squalor. Population growth in the UK did not slow down like Malthus hoped, in the 1841 census, the population was found to be 15.9 million. In the 1901 census, the population of England was 30.5 million. Despite all of this population growth, living standards actually improved. From 2010 to 2015, only 4.19 per 1,000 children in the UK (I imagine the rate is even lower in London) died before reaching five years of age and the population of England was 53 million in 2011. Now it is worth noting that most food which is consumed in the UK is actually imported. However, infant mortality and malnutrition rates have also been falling in the rest of the world. In 1991, a third of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa was undernourished but by 2015, it has fallen below 20%.

Population explosion is a big concern in today’s age. There are many reasons why the population is increasing so rapidly. One of the major reason is the illiteracy among the people. We see high population growth where there are poverty and illiteracy. Illiterate people are generally unaware of the birth control and usage of it. Also, poor people tend to marry at a young age without any sex education and end up having many kids. One of the other reasons for the population explosion is the development of science and medicine. The life expectancy of people has increased drastically.

To control the rate of population, different governments have taken a lot of steps around the world. Governments have used both positive and negative reinforcements. In India government has taken steps like eradicating poverty and increasing awareness. If people are educated, they will make better decisions regarding it. The government is trying to empower women so they can choose whether to conceive a baby or not. They have been attempting to develop the medical facilities throughout the country and have tried to educate more people about contraceptives. But if we take the example of China, we will see that they have put some harsh laws for birth controls. No family could conceive more than one child, and if they do so, they will be burdened with heavy taxes, and the cost of living for the second children will be unaffordable for a middle-class family although this rule was removed recently.

Though population growth is not always harmful. No country has ever been able to grow with low urbanization. The young population is the driver of the economy. People are one of the bases of capitalization. But we need to keep a balance
