It took until the early 1800s for the world population to reach one billion. Now we add a billion every 12-15 years. (UN)

The UN estimates a population of nearly 9.8bn by 2050 – 30% higher than it is today. It also projects a possible population of 11bn by then, at which rate our numbers could reach 16bn by 2100. (UN)

ThE only viable solution to the problem lies in family planning which must be made effective and widespread. People should be given education and their attention drawn to the various dangers of population growth.
INDIA IS a developing country plagued by many problems such as poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, overpopulation, social evils, backwardness and corruption. Ever since India got independence, our government has been trying to solve these problems. But the most important among them is the problem of overpopulation.
Overpopulation is one of the main reasons for India's economic backwardness. Population explosion also causes poverty, starvation, ill-health and many other problems. Whatever we achieve by means of economic development is eaten up by the ever increasing population. As the density of population in a given area increases, each person shares available supplies of land, water, fuel, which keeps decreasing. At present the world population is about 600 crore and about 8 crore people are being added to it every year. In India alone there was an addition of 900 million people in five years. So the problem of population is very crucial to us.
