Answer:
Yes I agree with this statement.
If democracy is a machine, independent media is its lubricant. When media lose its freedom, it would result in excess of friction in the system. Owing to wear and tear, the system collapses finally.
It is ideal in a democracy that the citizens are well informed about the society they live in and the decisions they make about the society.
For eg:, a citizen going to vote in an election must know,
1. Whether his perceptions about the government & the opposition is objective.
2. How much fact lies in the claims made by the government about what they have done.
3. How factual are the allegations raised by opposition against the government.
Only a responsible media with a proper editorial policy could inform the citizens with reports and analyses about the society they live in. To ensure that the information dissemination happens without any bottlenecks, the editorial policy has to be independent in all senses - right from the government to market forces, no one should interfere in the editorial policy of media.
In India and most countries, media can only be run by the support of market forces, if not the government. For the same reason, what we see in the media is often what certain powerful people want us to see.
This situation has to change. Unadulterated information is the fundamental right of every citizen. Access to correct information must not be a privilege of the powerful.
