Before India became independent in 1947, the Indians had to obey rules in which they had no or little role in making. They faced severe punishment if they ever criticized British government. The leaders of Indian freedom struggle thought of a system in which everyone would be treated equally. They wanted a government which would be sensitive to people's needs and demands. These dreams of freedom fighters were given a concrete form in the constitution of independent India, which adopted the Parliamentary form of democracy based on the principle of Universal Adult Franchise.
