India emerged as an Independent nation amidst heavy turmoil implies the following:

1. Partition of the country brought about most tragic, abrupt transfer of population.

2. Lakhs of Hindus, Sikhs in the areas which were to be part of Pakistan and Muslims in Punjab, Calcutta, Delhi and others found themselves trapped, compelled to leave their ancestors home.

3. These religious minorities became easy targets, there were killings, atrocities on both the sides of border.

4. The country witnessed worst communal riots, as in the name of religion majority community on either side of the border attacked minorities.

5. The partition of the Country brought about the problem of religious minorities. The Constitution had to preserve their right and dignity which it did by providing equal rights and declaring India to be a secular state.

6. There was a problem of Princely states that surfaced after the Independence. The British had left the Princely rulers to decide their fate of merging either with Pakistan or India to them, which appeared to be the colossal task.

7. India also witnessed huge economic problems, at the time of Independence country was reduced to abject poverty, faced famine, drought.
