Hint: India has an average annual rainfall of 125 cm, the monsoon (June to September) accounts for 75% of the total rainfall. While the western coast and northeastern regions of India collect about 400 cm of precipitation per year, areas like Rajasthan and Gujarat receive less than 60 cm.

Complete answer: The Indian monsoon pattern is one of the most studied and noteworthy monsoon patterns in the world. In cooler months, the wind blows from the northeast, and in warmer months of the year, it moves in the opposite direction from the southwest. While the southeast monsoon moves from sea to land, northeast moves from land to sea. These two phenomena affect the climate of India.

The regions that receive rainfall in winter in India are Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This is due to a phenomenon called North east monsoon. Northeast monsoon occurs during October- December and affects only the southern part of India. It is comparatively monsoon on a smaller scale. Also called the winter monsoon, the northeast rainfall is significant in Tamil Nadu, the coast of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, north of Karnataka and Lakshadweep. Some South Asian countries like Sri Lanka and Myanmar witness rainfall during October to December.

Note: The average annual rainfall in India is 300-650 ml, and 75% of that is accounted for by the southwest monsoon. The southwest monsoon is the major rainy season of India. Since it blows from sea to land, it carries more moisture, and hence more rain. Northeast monsoon on the other hand, blows over land to sea, and only picks up a little moisture from the Bay of Bengal, and hence rains only over the southern peninsula.
