India has not much written history because the trend of writing and preserving records was bought up in India by the Mughals during Akbar's reign. Before that no written records were kept by the Indians. This is the reason why the historians are still trying to figure out the mysteries during the Mahabharat. Nobody has a proof about various theories during that time and without a proof nothing is believed. The events that took place during Akbar's reign and after that are available to us and moreover they are believed because they were written down as it is and there and then. Their are various theories about what happened before the Mughals arrived in India but very few are believed.
Written history is the most valuable and trusted proof about the past.
