India has 28 states and 8 Union Territories. The Constitution of India provides for a High
Court in each state. But there can be a common High Court for two or more states and
union territories. A High Court has a Chief Justice and a number of other judges. The
Constitution has not fixed the number of judges for a High court. At present, there are 24
High Courts in our country. The number of judges of a High Court is dependent on the size
and population of the state. All the judges of High Court are appointed by the President of
India. A judge of a High Court must be a citizen of India. He must have held a judicial
office in the country for atleast ten years or he should be a practicing advocate of the High
Court for a period of not less than ten years. A High Court has three types of jurisdictions.
