Answer:

India may be the fastest-growing economy, but it lags behind its neighbours on many indicators

India ranks 130 out of 188 countries on the Human Development Index. Its maternal mortality rate is higher than that of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The world’s fastest-growing economy, on course to become the world’s third largest by 2030 with a gross domestic product of $7.3 trillion, India continues to trail smaller South Asian neighbours – in some instances, Pakistan and Bangladesh – on several social indicators.

India’s per-capita GDP of $5,238 in 2013 was 65% lower than that of Iran, 54% lower than Maldives ($11,283), 44% lower than Sri Lanka ($9,426) and 27% lower than Bhutan ($7,167), according to the Human Development Report 2015.

India was ranked 130 of 188 countries world-wide on the Human Development Index 2015 – below Iran (69), Sri Lanka (73) and Maldives (104) in South Asia.Similarly, on the Human Capital Index 2016, which measures national learning and employment outcomes, India ranked 105 out of 130 countries, below Sri Lanka (50), Bhutan (91) and Bangladesh (104).

The Human Development Index ranking focuses on indicators that “lead to a long and healthy life, the ability to acquire knowledge, and the ability to achieve a decent standard of living”. The data for the Human Development Index report 2015 has been collected from various international agencies ranging between 2005 to 2014.

Answer:

those living on less than $ 1.9 per day per

person are considered poor. According to this, India lags behind even its neighbors. Poor

people are 4% in Pakistan, 15% in Bangladesh and less than 1% in China and Sri Lanka.

Insecure groups - The poverty line is also not uniform among all social groups and economic

classes in India. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe families, rural landless agricultural

labor families and urban casual laborer families

are the most vulnerable to poverty. Some

people, even in poor families, face more difficulties than others, such as women, older people

and girls who are denied access to the family's available resources. They are also called

poorest among the poor.
