Post WWII, the whole world was divided into two blocs: The NATO led by the USA, and the Warsaw Pact countries led by USSR. The division was primarily in ideological basis: NATO (US and Western Countries) was Capitalist and Warsaw Pact was Communist. There was an intense power struggle between both these blocs and each wanted to bring more and more newly independent countries in Asia and Africa within its Sphere of Influence.

Indian foreign policy just after independence was primarily driven by Nehruvian thought. Nehru advocated neutrality and avoided both blocs because he felt that being part of any one bloc would impact India's growth prospects as well as its hard earned sovereignty. India led the formation of Non Aligned Movement (NAM) that kept distance from both world powers.

Pakistan on the other hand joined US backed SEATO and received aid as well as weapons from SEATO for its association with the US. NATO also sided with Pakistan on the issue of Kashmir in the UN.

It was here the USSR came to India's help. USSR vetoed a UN resolution on Kashmir in 1957. India too sided with USSR on issues of Soviet interference in Hungary in 1956.

Slowly India and the USSR came closer. There was gradual inclination of other NAM countries towards USSR as well because of aggressive NATO policies of containment. Cuba went on to the extent of defining USSR as natural ally of NAM countries despite following philosophy of non alignment

USSR remained more or less neutral in 1962 and 1965 wars. But before 1971 war, India signed 20 year Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation with USSR (which was a significant deviation from policy of NAM). The reason was indifferent attitude of the US towards crisis in East Pakistan and its aggressive stance in case of Indian intervention in East Pakistan's affairs. US had even deployed one aircraft carrier (USS Enterprise) in the Indian Ocean to threaten India not to attack.

It was in this backdrop that India and USSR signed the treaty. One of its clause was to help each other in case any one of them comes under threat of external aggression. This meant that USSR will enter the conflict in case US attacks India. This treaty helped India a great deal in 1971 war, because India was now sure that US will not intervene in Indo-Pak war.

Apart from that Russia provided India with weapons. Russia has been and still is India's largest arms trade partner. Apart from that Russia helped in industrialization of Indian economy (like setting up steel plants in Bhilai and Bokaro), education (like IIT Bombay) etc.

The relationships have seen some ups and downs post 1991 USSR break-up and India's economic liberalization, and India's growing closeness to the West. But the relationships have always been cordial overall.
