The orographic rainfall occurs due to the ascent of air forced by the mountain barrier. ... In south India, the Mangalore is located on the western windward slope and gets 2000 mm of rainfall. But Bangalore is in rain shadow area and that is why receives less than 500 mm of rainfall.

India is surrounded by mountains, specially the Himalayas. The Himalayas intercept the rain bearing winds of the monsoon, thus causing rainfall. Again on the Western side of India, there are the Western Ghats, which intercept the moisture bearing winds of the Arabian Sea branch of SW monsoon and cause rainfall in the western part of the Western Ghats. The eastern part gets a little rainfall. The Bay of Bengal branch of SW monsoon blows parallel to the Eastern Ghats, but the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia Hills intercept them, which causes rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya.
