India is a secular state because: There is no official religion of the Indian State. The Constitution provides to all individuals and communities freedom to profess, practice and propagate any religion, or not to follow any.

  2. It does not prefer or punish or discriminate people on the basis of religion.
  3. India cannot compel anyone to take part in religious instruction, to attend any religious worship or pay taxes for the maintenance or promotion of any religion
