Answer:

With the Forty-second Amendment of the Constitution of India enacted in 1976, the Preamble to the Constitution asserted that India is a secular nation. The Indian Constitution has allowed extensive interference of the state in religious affairs. ... India does partially separate religion and state.

India is a secular country because it says so in the preamble of the constitution. We have no state religion. And the state cannot discriminate against any religion. Note that Indian concept of secularism is different than western concept of secularism which entails a strict “separation of church and state.”

The reason for this secularism is many reasons, firstly cultural. India has been the melting pot of different cultures and religions and we have all learnt to peacefully co-exist and even adopt elements from other’s religions. Eg. the Bhakti movement was greatly inspired by Sufi saints who fled Safavid persecution.
