India is a vast country, housing people from different regions of the world. This led to the growth of various religions, communities, culture, languages, dresses and food habits. Only a few countries in the world are as diverse as India is. POPULATION The total number of people living in a country, city or any district is called its population India is a country with a huge population. It has the 2nd largest population in the world with about 1.21 billion (2011 census) people. This constitutes 17.3% of the world's population. Migration is a major factor that influences the distribution of population. Different groups of people from different parts of the world migrate to India and adapt its culture and lifestyle. This results in a wide range of ethnically different people living in India. Inspite of India's huge population, India has unity among the people. This unity is visible during any natural calamity. LANGUAGES Language is an important medium of communication. We speak different languages to communicate. More than 1600 dialects are spoken in our country. In India, many languages are in uses. But 22 languages have been chosen as Schedule Languages. These are recognised by the Constitution of India. The languages are: 1. Assamese 2. Bengali 5. Gujarati 4. Dogri 7. Kannada 8. Kashmiri 10. Maithili 13. Marathi 11. Malayalam 14. Nepali 16. Punjabi 17. Sanskrit 3. Bodo, 6. Hindi 9. Konkani 12. Manipuri 15. Oriya 18. Santhali 21. Telugu 19. Sindhi 20. Tamil 22. Urdu Each group of people in India has specific languages, such as: • People of Kashmir speak Kashmiri, Ladakhi, Dongri and Urdu. • People of Himachal Pradesh speak Pahari, Punjabi and Kinnauri. • People of Uttarakhand speak Hindi and Garhwali. People of Bihar speak Hindi, Bhojpuri and Maithili. • People of Maharashtra speak Marathi and Konkani. Most of the Indian languages are written from left to right.
