India is both a democracy and a republic.Justify the statement.

All real republics are democracies, but not all democracies are republics. A democracy implies majority rule, while a republic goes a step ahead and affirms that everyone has equal rights, even a minority of one. No ones rights can be trampled upon just because the majority thinks so.

I have used the word "real" republic. There are many fake ones, brandishing names like "People's Republic" (for example North Korea, China, Cuba) and theological republics (for example Islamic republics). These are a contradiction in terms.
