Answer:

India is ahead.

The international date line runs through the Pacific Ocean.

If you’ve ever stayed up watching the fireworks and other celebrations on New Year’s Eve you may have noticed the first places to celebrate midnight and hence the New Year are the small island nations in the Pacific such as Tuvalu and Fiji followed by New Zealand and Australia. As you progressively move westward the day gradually moves forward onto the Asian continent including India. Then the European countries followed by the American continent, including Brazil are the last to welcome the new day.

When it is 9am in Sydney Australia it is 4.30am in Kolkata, India and 8pm the night before in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Another way of looking at it is the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The further east you are the earlier the sun rises and the earlier the day begins.

The international date line being a human construct that we have as a globe agreed to - if we randomly put the international date line somewhere else it would be different - but being where it is that’s the way it is.
