The total are of India is 324 million hactre of which around 160 million hactre is cultivated producing wide varities of crops from mighty Himalayas to Indo-Ganga-Brahmaputra plains to Deccan up to Kanyakumari.

The specific answer to the question is the Ganga-Brahmaputra plains whcih is the largest plains on Earth which is cultivated from Indus valley civilization.[1]

The climate, soil conditions, fresh silt deposits by rivers every year coupled with technological advances and human interventions through construction of dams and storage facilities has supported thousands of generation with abundant quantity of food grains which resulted in one of the most densely populated areas like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar[2].

UP stands first in total food grains, wheat, sugarcane and mango production among major crops in India. Haryana, Punjab leads in rice, wheat, mustard productivity due to green revolution in 1960 and 1970s.[3]

Due to these few factors the region is predominantly a agriculture dominated and less industrialized barring a few pockets in Punjab, Haryana and western UP which has resulted in slow pace of socio-economic development .
