India is not an arid land since the wind systems and pressure over India is quite distinctive

EXPLANATION:

  • In winter there is a 'high-pressure region' in the Himalayas northern side. Cold and dry winds move from this area to the 'low-pressure regions' across the oceans towards the south. During summer, a 'low-pressure region' forms across interior Asia and across 'North-West India'.
  • This results in a total turnaround of the direction of the winds during summer. Air flows from the 'high-pressure region' across the south of the Indian Ocean, in a 'South-East direction', passes the Equator, and goes right to the 'low-pressure regions' across the 'sub-continent of India'.
  • These are known as the 'South-West Monsoon winds'. These 'winds blow' across the 'warm oceans', 'accumulate moisture' and bring extensive rainfall across India’s mainland.
