There was no universal adult franchise at that time. So, the Constituent Assembly could not have been chosen directly by all the people of India. It was elected mainly by the members of existing Provincial Legislatures. This ensured a fair geographical share of members from all the regions of the country.

In popular perception, Ambedkar is solely credited with the Constitution’s framing. The fact that a Dalit is popularly regarded as “the father of the Indian Constitution” or appreciated for drafting the supreme law of the land is difficult for many caste Hindus to digest.
