Britain introduced modern democracy in India. Democracy worked well for the British and for India in the early years after Independence.

Democracy operates through a system that rests on procedure. If due procedures are observed the system in the natural course throws up decisions that reflect the majority view. That ensures stability. During the decades after Nehru and Shastri democratic procedures gradually eroded and have now almost disappeared. That is why today Indian democracy has become such a grotesque caricature of itself. Consider just a few facets of the current crisis

Work of Indian democracy:

The Democracy of India works within the framework of the country's establishment. India is a federal legislative democratic state in which the President of India is the crown of state and the Prime Minister of India is the head of government. India trails the dual polity system, i.e. a double government (federal in nature) that comprises of the central authority at the center and states at the margin. The constitution defines the organizational powers and confines of both central and state governments, and it is well recognized, rigid and measured supreme; i.e. the laws of the nation must settle to it.

There is a establishment for a bicameral legislature involving an upper house, the Rajya Sabha (Council of States), which signifies the states of the Indian alliance, and a lower house, the Lok Sabha (House of the People), which signifies the people of India as a whole. The Indian establishment provides for an independent judiciary, which is controlled by the Supreme Court.
