The most basic measure of democracy is electoral efficacy. If a nation has free and fair elections, coupled by competing parties with varied representative interests, it can be classified as a democracy. There are currently 123 democracies in the world of all 192 countries.

Around 1.2 billion people live in India, and everyone over the age of 18 has the right to vote. India is the seventh largest (by area) and the second most populous country in the world, with roughly one-sixth of its population, of about a billion and a quarter. With a 100 million new-registered voters, India's electorate is five times bigger than the 146 million people who were registered to vote in the 2012 elections in the USA – the world's second largest democracy. That makes it the world's biggest democracy.

Democratic process in India covers a large population. The concept of democracy is different in socialist/communist countries. They believe in dictatorship of the proletariat. So in term of its population Democracy in India is called the largest democracy
