In fact, many countries which are considered dictatorships by others call themself democratic just because they force everyone at gunpoint to vote in an election where there is only one candidate. The German Democratic Republic, for example, had the word "democratic" in it's name even though it is generally agreed that it was a totalitarian socialist state.

★ What is a democracy ?


Democracy is a form of government in which the rulers are elected by people . The word "Democracy" is derived from two Greek words , "Demo" meaning "people" , and "kratia" meaning "to rule" . This literally means peoples' rule .

Following are the common features of a democracy :

1. Freedom of speech and expression of thoughts .

2. Elections are held at regular intervals and are free and fair .

3. Dignity of the individual is recognised .

4. The ruler is elected by the people and he/she takes all the major decisions on behalf of the people .

5. Elections offer a choice and fair opportunity to people to change the current rulers . The choice and opportunity is available to all the people on equal basis .

6. The exercise of this choice leads to a government limited by basic rules of the constitution and citizen rights .

1. A democratic government is a better government because it is a more accountable form of government as it responds to the needs of the citizens .

2. Democracy improves the quality of decision making .

3. Democracy provides a method to deal with differences and conflicts between citizens .

4. Democracy enhances the dignity of the citizens .

5. Democracy allows us to correct its own mistakes .



★ What is the role of constitution in a democracy ? (In India)

We all know that , even countries under the rule of monarchs and autocrats are also having their constitutions . Then , why not in India ?

You might be knowing that the Indian constitution is the largest constitution of this world . The Indian Constitution was enacted on 26th November , 1949 , but it came into effect on 26th January , 1950 . The Indian constitution has 448 articles , 22 parts and 12 schedules in itself , which makes it very accountable . In the constitution , we have each and every law and order written in it . These orders are sanctioned by law . These are the main reasons for Indian Democracy to be called the largest democracy all over the world .



★ Why should we accept the constitution enacted more than 65 years ago ?


1.The drafting of the constitution was done by an assembly of elected representatives called Constituent Assembly . The elections were held in July 1946 .


2. Several groups have questioned some provisions of the constitution , but no large social group or party has ever questioned the legitimacy of the Indian constitution .


3. The Constituent Assembly represented the people of India . There was no universal adult franchise at that time so the Constituent Assembly could not have been chosen directly by all the people of India . This ensured a fair geographical share of members from all regions of the country .


4. The Constituent Assembly worked in a systematic and consensual manner .



All the above given reasons make it clear that Indian Democracy is totally based on the citizens and since the power rests with the citizens , the Democracy itself becomes the most renowned one in the world . So , the above given statement is true .
