Maharashtra’s history dates back to as back as 4th century BCE.
It got its name from the word ‘rathi’ meaning chariot driver, and became known to the history when first Buddhist caves were made in it in 2nd century BC.
There are many dynasties which have ruled over Maharashtra.
The prominent being the Chalukya dynasty and the Rashtrakuta dynasty.
Maharashtra also saw Islamic rule under Ala-ud-din-Khilji and Mohammad bin Tughluq.
But it was the advent of Maratha Empire from 17th to 19th century that finally gave remarkable recognition to Maharashtra.

महाराष्ट्र का इतिहास 4 वीं शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व के रूप में वापस आता है।
इसे 'राठी' शब्द का नाम रथ चालक से लिया गया, और इतिहास के लिए जाना जाने लगा जब पहली बौद्ध गुफाओं को दूसरी शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व में बनाया गया था।
