Indian households are now increasingly using LPG and CNG as their preferred fuel over coal,
wood and petrol because of its availability. However coal a fossil fuel is the largest source of energyfor the generation of electricity Worldwide but it releases harmful gases. Peat, lignite, bituminous
and anthracite are the different varieties of coal which differ from each other on the % of carbon
content, volatile material and moisture. Economic development and rapidly growing population are
putting a strain on the environment. The present day strategy, to address these environmental
issues ,is to develop technology that uses renewable natural resources. For energy needs, we must
look for alternative sources such as solar energy, tidal energy and wind energy.
a) In thermal power plants, electricity is produced by combustion of fossil fuel ‘F’. Identify ‘F' .Is ‘F'
renewable or non-renewable?
b) ‘Alternative sources of energy are boon for the environment’. Justify the statement.
c) Arrange the fuels- LPG, wood, kerosene in the order of their increasing efficiency.
d)List the measures which you should follow in home as a responsible citizen for the conservation of
