Indian Rulers Lose Their Powers
After the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the Company started
capturing territories and for the next 100 years, exploited the
Indian economy and its people. The nawabs and rajas, who once
held
power, gradually lost their stature and honour. Under the
Doctrine of Lapse, the British annexed more territories. Rani
Lakshmi Bai, the queen of Jhansi, also lost Jhansi to the British
under this doctrine. The British also seized Awadh in 1856, citing
that it was mismanaged by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah.
