Indian Tamils, Srilankan Tamils, Sinhalese, Christians, & Muslims  are the four major ethnic communities of  Sri Lanka.

Explanation:

  • The Sinhalese are the nation's main ethnic group with 11 million people officially or 74% of the nation's populace. The language "Sinhala",  is  a part of the "Indo-European linguistic community" comprising Hindi, northern Indian and most of the languages of Europe, separates them. The Buddhist religion reinforces the solidarity of the Sinhalese as an ethnic community.
  • Indian Tamils are Tamils from Sri Lanka are also known as Tamils from the Hill Country, Tamil Highlands or just Indian Tamils. Some of them came from workers sent to Sri Lanka by coffee , tea and rubber plantations in the 19th & 20th centuries in South India. These Tamil speakers live in the centre of the highlands, called the Malayakam or Hill Country, but other speakers are found in significant urban areas as well as in the Northern Province. While these are today known as Tamils, others come from Telugu and Malaya as well as various southern Indian castes.
  • Sri Lankan Tamils, also known as "Eelam Tamils", "Ceylon Tamils" or simply the Tamils, belongs to the South Asian Sri Lankan ethnic community. They are now a majority in the ""Northern Province, are in substantial numbers in the "eastern Province" & belong to the minority in the rest of the country. In North & Eastern Sri Lanka 70 percent of Sri Lankan Tamils live
  • A community of minorities practising Islamic faith include Muslims, who make up about 7 percent of the population. As for the other minority groups, the Muslims have their own distinct theological and spiritual heroes, social structures and also  their own cultures. Three major sections of the Muslim community-The Moors of Sri Lanka, the Moors of India and the Malays Moors each having  their own origins and practises.
  • 7 per cent of Sri Lanka's 21 million population are Christians. Much of them are Catholic Romans. Christians in Sri Lanka have a long history that represents both the complexities of colonisation and emerging racial and religious divisions. The Protestant group in Sri Lanka is very weak, comprising only 1 % of the population of Sri Lanka. Like Catholicism, Protestant Christianity took a foothold on the island via colonisation.
