Due to the domination of outsiders over northern and north-western parts of India in the period under consideration, new elements of culture came in; there was assimilation of those outside elements into the Indian society and as a consequence there was an impact of this infusion on the development of trade, technology, arts and sciences.

These Central Asian contacts, involving movement of people, established the basis of trade between Central Asia and India firmly. Trading contacts with Afghanistan were already there, and trading with Central Asia began with the opening up of new routes one of which was the famous Old Silk Route.

Traders of various ethnicities set up marts and colonies in places like Kashgar, Khotan, Miran, Yarkand, etc., from where the merchants carried out their businesses. Not only Indian merchants but also Buddhist missionaries helped the trade to grow leading to an improvement in the links with China.

The Kushanas controlled the Silk Route from China to West Asia passing through Central Asia and Afghanistan on which they collected tolls. It was a good source of income for the Kushanas, who received a lot of gold from the Altai Mountains of central Asia as also from the Roman Empire.
