Why did Indira Gandhi's government insert the provision of 'secular' in our constitution? Why have subsequent governments not removed it? Does Indira Gandhi deserve appreciation for amending the preamble?

This question revolves around the history and significance of the 42nd ammendment of the Indian constitution, 1976. I would like to write some points which would put some light on this issue.
In the preamble, Sovereign Democratic Republic was changed to Sovereign Secular Socialist Democratic Republic. Although a large number of changes were made let's stick to the secular and socialist part for now.

1. Ambedkar was opposed to adding up socialist and secular at the time of creating the constitution as he believed that the constitution should be a mechanism which could change by time according to the need.
2. Sanjay  Gandhi wanted to start a mass sterilisation programme for which SECULAR had to be added which made his programme constitutionally valid.
3. J.P Narayan had started a mass movement against Indira and SOCIALIST was added in counter attack.
2.  National Emergency : 1976 was the period of national emergency and Indira govt wanted to increase its power and supress the opposition.
3. There had been major conflicts of the govt with the judiciary and Indira wanted to empower the govt.
