When we refer to the exact words of the speaker in a sentence, it is said to be in direct speech.

Eg:- Simon said to Asha, "Did you attend you class yesterday?"

When we report what somebody said or thought in our own words, we use indirect speech.

Eg:- Simon asked to Asha that if she had attended her class yesterday.

Rules of changing DIRECT speech to INDIRECT speech:-

• Change the tense of the verb to past tense.

• Use reporting verbs, i.e. said, told, asked, exclaimed followed by that.
