Politics is a powerful mechanism for the improvement of people's lives. Ideally, it is a social service. In a democracy, the course politics takes in a country can be influenced directly or indirectly.
A lot of people enter politics out of a desire to serve the people in their immediate neighbourhood, their city or their state. Some have a greater desire of serving the country. For most politicians, joining political parties is their route to entering the political fray. Once this is done, they can begin influencing decision making in the municipalities, state legislatures or in the parliament. With leadership skills some hold power by becoming Chairmen of municipalities, others Ministers in the state or central Governments. Some elected representatives either head or are members of committees, which act as a check and balance mechanism on the way people are governed, as these committees periodically review and question the people holding office.
In a democracy, people can influence the politics of a country indirectly too. They can collectively form pressure groups if they feel they are not getting their rightful due from the Government of the day or the rulers are not taking the correct steps in redressing their problems. In recent times, Anna Hazare's movement against corruption and the students' movement across the country later brought in some changes. Around forty years earlier, Jaiprakash Narayan's movement against the draconian measures adopted during the Emergency changed an all-powerful Government and ushered in social change subsequently.
In view of the foregoing one can safely say that politics can be influenced both directly and indirectly.

Answer:
An ordinary citizen can influence politics by making himself a part of pressure groups. Pressure groups are organizations that attempt to influence government policies. These organizations do not control or share political power. These organizations are formed when people with common occupation, interest, aspirations or opinions come together in order to achieve a common objective
