Trade unions, also known as labor unions, have been an important part of the American labor movement since 1794. Although membership has declined over the past 35 years, in 2017, 14.8 million U.S. workers were union members, which is 262,000 more than it was in 2016. The relationship between labor unions and employers has often been contentious, but the truth is that labor unions play an important role in the way employers and workers function together to create a harmonious workplace.
