It was the large-scale economic transition that happened in Britain from 1760 to 1820.  The widespread use of both machinery in place of handicraft and powered machinery.
 
As originally defined by Arnold Toynbee(the uncle of the more famous historian of civilisations), it also included the British Agricultural Revolution.
