1. The textile mills in the industrial cities of Britain like Leeds and Manchester attracted migrants. By 1851, three quarter of the adult population of Manchester comprised of migrants from rural areas.

2. A huge number of skilled and unskilled workers came and settled in London to work in the industries like footwear, metal and engineering, wood and furniture, priming and stationery.

3. In 1854, the first cotton mill was set up in Bombay. In 1921 there were 85 cotton mills where 1,46,000 workers were employed. Between 1851 and 1931 only one fourth of the people living in the city were born in Bombay, rest of them came from outside. Many of them were from Ratnagiri who had come in search of work in the Bombay mills.
