It is at rest it tends to remain at rest,if it is moving it tends to keep moving.Tbis property of an object is called its inertia.

•Newton's first law , also called the
law of inertia , states that, unless acted upon by an external force, an object at rest remains at rest, or if in motion, it continues to move in a straight line with constant speed. Uniform motion therefore does not require a cause.

•Any change in motion involves an acceleration, and then Newton's Second Law applies. The First Law could be viewed as just a special case of the Second Law for which the net external force is zero, but that carries some presumptions about the frame of reference in which the motion is being viewed.

hope it helps
