Vertical Hydroponics is better than horizontal farming (and horizontal hydroponics) in many ways. For conversation's sake, let's just consider Vertical Hydroponics over Traditional Horizontal Farming.
1) Saves 80-90% of the water by recirculating and recycling it.
2) Produces 5-10 Times more per square foot of space.
3) Much less labor : No weeding, tilling, crop rotation planning.
4) Less pests and diseases.
5) No soil runoff contaminants.
The advantages of traditional farming is that cheap country real estate is available if you can scale up your business size. Also, Fresh Water is still inexpensive but has begun a longterm trend of cost increases. These cost increases will continue in that direction as the world population continues to grow. Then you have whatever other large equipment/pesticide/etc costs. That's what i'm willing to contribute to this conversation for now. Hope that helps.
